To Protect and Preserve: An Early History of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, Illinois, 1900-1930

Daniel H. Burnham (1846-1912)

Daniel H. Burnham, an architect and city planner, designed several famous structures in Chicago, including the Montauk and Rookery buildings. In 1893, he designed the layout for the World’s Columbian Exposition with Frederick Law Olmsted and Dwight Perkins. Burnham is perhaps most famous for his urban planning projects for San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Chicago. His Plan of Chicago incorporated several key features of Dwight Perkins and Jens Jensen’s vision for a forest preserve district.
