To Protect and Preserve: An Early History of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, Illinois, 1900-1930

Peter Reinberg (1858-1921)

Peter Reinberg was born and raised in the Chicago area. A successful florist, Reinberg entered politics as an alderman for Chicago’s 26th ward. He later rose in county politics, becoming the President of the Board of Cook County Commissioners in 1914, a post he retained until his sudden death seven years later. As board president, and therefore the first president of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, he oversaw the acquisition of more than 18,000 acres of land. In his memory, the Forest Preserve District established a youth and recreational campground in his name. Camp Reinberg, one of the earliest Forest Preserve District facilities, is located north of Palatine near the Lake County border.
