To Protect and Preserve: An Early History of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, Illinois, 1900-1930

Prairie School Architecture

The Prairie School architectural movement began in the 1890s in Chicago. It rapidly spread through the Midwest and later influenced architects worldwide. Largely focusing on residential buildings, Prairie School design reflected a prairie landscape through horizontal lines, simple ornamentation, the use of natural materials, and the integration of houses with that landscape. Frank Lloyd Wright is undoubtedly the most famous Prairie School architect, but Robert C. Spencer, Myron Hunt, and, Dwight Perkins, the famed forest preserve advocate, contributed to the Prairie School style as well.
