Club members often came from an elite group of wealthy Chicagoans, among them George Pullman and Marshall Field. Like other civic improvement clubs, the Commercial Club focused on social reform and city planning. They distributed Burnham’s Plan of Chicago in 1909. The Commercial Club endorsed the creation of more city parks and playgrounds and the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.
