Treating people with AIDS

The AIDS crisis began in Horizon’s early years of operation. People with AIDS quickly became a large portion of the organization's patient base.  Despite the fear and confusion surrounding HIV and AIDS at that time, the hospice rapidly organized in support of Chicagoans facing AIDS, understanding that their strategy needed to support adults and children. Its fundraising began to target the specific needs of people with HIV and AIDS, which ranged from nursing support and meals to finding housing. The hospice also built partnerships with other local agencies who could help or were already working with AIDS patients.

Horizon Hospice partnered with Chicago House in the early 1990s, creating facilities where people with AIDS could get housing and treatment. Chicago House is an organization primarily focused on care for people with HIV/AIDS.
