Demographic transformations

Legacy of leadership

Friends, family, and former colleagues reflect on Richard M. Daley’s leadership style during his long career serving the public.

Daley issued “blue notes” to his staff. These notes directed those who reported to him to fix any manner of problems that had come to his attention. Ray Orozco, chief of staff (2010-2011), explains:

Observers recall that despite a hectic and demanding schedule, Richard M. Daley remembered the importance of community, family, and humility.
