Daley Oral History collection. The approximately sixty interviews from the collection provide insights into Richard J. Daley's tenure as mayor of Chicago from 1955 to 1976. Collecting efforts began in 2002 at the former University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Historian’s Office under the direction of historian and UIC professor Robert V. Remini. The interviews were completed in 2014 by oral historian Marie Scatena. Interviewers for the Richard J. Daley Oral History Project were Robert V. Remini, Fred Beuttler, David Veenstra, Jason Waak and Marie Scatena.
The interviews contain stories and personal reminiscences from family, friends, and colleagues who worked closely with the mayor. Individuals interviewed were selected by members of Richard J. Daley’s family. The interviews were audio or video recorded at UIC or in the field, and interview transcripts were then edited by the individuals interviewed. Full transcripts are housed in the Richard J. Daley Special Collections and University Archives.
To access PDF copies of the transcripts and read short biographies of each individual who generously donated their reminiscences, please visit the Interviewees and Transcripts page on this website.
